ART 107 - Watercolor/Water-based Media

This course introduces the student to the basic tools, materials and practices of watercolor and other water-based media, with an emphasis on the exploration of contemporary approaches to these media. Experimentation with materials and solutions to problems presented in class will be emphasized to instill the student with an understanding of painting as a creative act that reflects the personal sensibilities of the artist. Involvement of the student in critical evaluation of their work and the work of others will be a major component of the course. three studio hours.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Utilize a range of water-based media and materials, including watercolor, gouache, water-soluble pencils and crayons, brush and ink, as well as a variety of brushes and papers.
2. Utilize a range of watercolor techniques, including transparent washes, masking,
wet-into-wet blending, and dry brush.
3. Demonstrate and Utilize an understanding of basic color theory.
4. Apply water-based media materials and techniques in the creation of a series
of representational and abstract images.
5. Evaluate artwork using formal art vocabulary.
6. Demonstrate an awareness of historical precedents and contemporary trends as they relate to the use watercolor and other water-based media.
